Are there any over the counter remedies for Arthritis?

My stepfather just recently got out of the hospital with an ulcer that nearly killed him. His MD said it was from his arthritis meds and has been reluctant to give him anything else. He was on these meds for 10 years and now that he has nothing to take his condition is terrible. He has pain in his arm wrist and elbow on one side and his knee on the other, he also has pain in both feet. It’s so bad he can hardly get out of bed and has actually been crying, which is a first. His doctor doesn’t respond to his pages and he hasn’t been able to get him on the phone to explain how bad the pain is. At the hospital they told him to take tylenol which he has been but it’s not working. He has also been using heat pads which don’t take the pain away either. Does anyone have any ideas for this condition or medications you know of they won’t cause stomach problems. He has an appointment to see a specialist but he has to wait a month as a new patient.
